What Does it Mean When You “Accept UnitedHealth Care Dental” Insurance?

Dentists can decide to “accept the insurance” or to become “in network” or to become “participating providers.” These are all different ways of saying the same thing. When you are in network, the dentist(s) and insurance company agree on multiple items in a signed contract. So when the dentist treats patients covered by that insurance plan, those agreements are in place. In nearly all cases, this results in cost savings for the patient.
For example, for many UHC Dental plans, they cover 2 cleanings and 2 exams per year at no out of pocket expense to you. You as the patient receive this beneft ONLY IF you visit a dentist who participates with that plan. If you elect to visit a dentist out of network, it is possible there will be expenses associated with the cleanings that you did not expect. In some cases, the visit is not covered AT ALL.
As always, every insurance plan is different. But there are advantages to visiting a dentist who takes the insurance (assuming they have a clean and modern office with a great staff like we do!).
